DressUpDolls

Dress Up Dolls and Your Wardrobe: Released on 1st January 2006 and Relaunched on 6th December 2020

Official Description: The Dress Up Doll (or Character) is a user's customizable avatar. The Wardrobe stores every article of clothing that the doll can wear. All clothing comes in different colours, whether they are made that way or had their colour changed via the Lush Fountain.

How it Works: Click on any item to try it on and then press the 'Update' button to change your doll. If you have the Wardrobe Selfie Giftbox, you can save your favourite styles to go back to later as a Selfie.

Update Log[]

  • 10th January 2006 - We have changed the way that Sunglasses now work. They are no longer one use items, but instead are added to your Wardrobe. Thanks the way we log everything that you do, all sunglasses you have used before today have now been added to you wardrobes.
  • 27th February 2013 - All Contact Lenses are no longer one use items. They will be added to your Wardrobe to be used whenever you want to!
  • 23rd June 2013/1st March 2014 - All Shirts (including the Murfin Madness and Mission prize shirts) can now be added to Wardrobe and worn by both male and female characters.
  • 14th March 2014 - The new Missing Wardrobe Giftbox unlocks a new feature in your Wardrobe. You will be able to view all of the items you do not have in your wardrobe, organised by category, with a price check feature and giving you the chance to try the clothes on before you buy them!
  • 9th June 2014 - One of the first ever Account Upgrades we ever had (back in 2004/5) had limited edition Gold Pet Necklaces as a main prize. They have never had any purpose at all but you can now finally add them to your wardrobe. They are also are the first Jewellery items.
  • 15th June 2014 - You can now add ALL jewellery items around the site to your wardrobe. This includes all necklaces, rings and bracelets from Goals and the Advent Calendar!
  • 16th June 2014 - Wardrobes have been updated. Your wardrobe will now show all of the clothing and accessories your character is currently wearing, with an easy 'Remove' link to take off certain items. You can also see what other players are wearing when you view their Wardrobe. The Lush Fountain also now lists all of the items your character is currently wearing, with the option to change the colour of each item to any colour you have unlocked so far.
  • 26th July 2014 - The Paper Hats from Christmas Crackers (that you can win from the Christmas Tree) have been revamped and can now be added to your Wardrobe for your character to wear. The King Baspinar Paper Crown can also be added to your Wardrobe.
You can now wear Sunglasses properly on a character: they will show over your character's eyes instead of replacing them.
  • 8th August 2014 - You can now add Lipsticks, Hair Dye, Eye and Face Makeup to your Wardrobes. They are no longer one use items, meaning that you can collect them all and change your style anytime for free. The new wardrobes make these items a lot better, as you can try on all of the different make up until you get the right look.
  • 11th November 2014 - We have revamped all of the Glasses on the site. Each pair of Glasses is unisex and can now be added to Wardrobes. If you had any of these items before the update, you will still have them, but they have just changed to a new item.
  • 15th February 2015 - There is a new feature for Wardrobes. You can now adjust the position of any Footwear. When your character is wearing footwear, you can choose 'move forward' or 'move behind' to adjust the layering of boots and shoes over different clothing. Jackets are also a new layer!
  • 13th March 2015 - If you have the Missing Wardrobe Giftbox, whenever you use Price Checker on any Clothing item, it will now show a red tick icon if you already have this item in your Wardrobe!
  • 13th June 2015 - A NEW FEATURE has been added to Wardrobes. You can now save the look of your character by taking a Selfie. Every player can save up to 3 selfies at once and switch between them at any time. If you use a Wardrobe Selfie Giftbox, this will increase to 45 (now 100 - use a maximum of 10 to gain 1,000 selfies).
  • 2nd October 2015 - The next phase of the Dress Up Dolls work has been completed. The Male Character has been redrawn. It is very similar to the female doll now, allowing us to draw unisex clothing and accessories a lot easier in the future.
    • Male Characters can now wear all of the female hairstyles. Females can also wear the male hairstyles that we are slowly adding to the Salon. The Salon will be re-coded when we have redrawn all hairstyles.
    • All Male Clothing & Footwear have been redrawn and made unisex. Female characters can now wear all of the male clothing - you will see it in the new Unisex Clothing wardrobe category.
    • Male Costumes and Male Selfies are currently disabled. We are still working on redrawing them to be unisex and fit the new doll. We are really sorry about this.
  • 1st December 2015 - All male themed Christmas Costumes for characters are now unisex. They have been redrawn and should show in your 'Unisex Tops' section of wardrobes.
  • 7th April 2017 - We have a new Wardrobe Search so you can find your clothing items much easier!
  • 23rd May 2019 - We are very pleased to announce that our Dress Up Dolls have been upgraded. They are now 100% mobile friendly and you will no longer need to have a browser with flash enabled.
We first released our dolls on the 1st of January, 2006, thus Marapets was the first pet site to ever have such a feature. (Did you know Marapets is 2 years older than Facebook?) They were very, very innovative back then by allowing total customisation, different layering of clothes and colours to be changed for every layer. Back in 2006, Macromedia Flash was the future! Now, as you may know, Flash became obsolete in 2020 and our flash games and flash dolls would've been too. For Ian, this was a major issue, as Flash did not load on mobile phones or tablets. It has also got slower and more unstable for desktop users too. Dolls have now switched to PNGs on all parts of the site as of August 2015. (Animated clothing and Experiences have been made static too.) This update solves this issue and allows our mobile/tablet players to update their dolls much quicker and easier.
  • 11th March 2020 - Several more very old and/or broken Wardrobe items have been updated. For example, the Candle Hat is now an Ari Wig, the Stone Age Wig is now a Shaggy Wig, the Rainbow Wig is now a Rainbow Bangs Hair Extension and the Sea Water Female Sash is now a Sea Water Blouse. The Sea Water Wig, Knitted Poncho and Striped Poncho have also been revamped and can finally change colour.
  • 22nd April 2020 - Our plan for the future is to gradually revamp and improve each of the weapon/armour items to eventually have two purposes - for your pets to use in Battle and for you to also collect in your Wardrobe. The five King Baspinar Swords are the first of these items to have both purposes.
As there are hundreds of these items, this is not a project that will happen overnight! Over the next few years, we'll randomly improve several batches of one-off items here and there. It'll take several years for the majority of these changes to happen and not all items are likely to be included. What it does mean though is that battle items will no longer be neglected (it's been a long time since we've had any new battle type items) as several new wardrobe items can be used in battle and vice versa.
  • 6th December 2020 - We've upgraded the hardware that runs our doll feature, allowing us to create each doll in much higher quality! Wardrobes will now show you a preview of the default doll wearing each item before you try it on your doll. This is the start of many new improvements for dolls coming in 2021.
If you have the Missing Wardrobe Giftbox, you can now press the 'Check Price' link on any Wardrobe item site-wide; whenever you click on the Wardrobe icon, it will show you a preview of the clothing.
  • 3rd July 2021 - Dolls are not currently working as they should, as the server that runs and processes player's Dolls has had problems for several days now. We expected it to be a quick "we'll fix it any minute now" solution, but after several days and hundreds of attempts, it's definitely not a quick fix anymore!

Features related to dolls remain open because a lot of them can still be used (even if the doll doesn't change or update), but we do not recommend using them. We'll continue trying to fix it today and if that fails, we'll start to rebuild and reinstall it from scratch and hopefully it'll be back online early this week. Your Selfies and Wardrobe Collections are safe - it's just the server that loads how they look that is having the issues.
  • October 2023 - Previously on Marapets, Ian spent 99% of 2022 and 2023 updating the Doll system:

Just like making Mara mobile, I probably wouldn't have started [the Dress Up feature] if I truly understood how huge of a job it was lol but... I've been converting every single piece of wardrobe clothing (there's nearly 20,000 parts!!) from ANCIENT 2005-era flash to modern code lol

[As of October 2023] I'm down to the last few hundred (stuff that didn't want to convert or just have issues that will need more work to fix).

I've also managed to "position" 4,683 of them so far, BUT obviously if I keep doing it myself, it'll take me months. I'd like to FINALLY finish before the end of the year so that Mara can FINALLY get back to normal updates, then we can FINALLY get rid of the old flash system that OFFICIALLY died in 2012 (and you all know how often it crashes now)!

This is also the reason why we didn't have a summer badge event; I wanted one of the challenges to be for players to help position some of the dolls, but couldn't get it to work on mobile and spent so much time on it that I run out of time to start the event.

    ANYWAY THE IMPORTANT PART:

I don't think anyone who plays on mobile will be able to do this (as it'll be too tricky).

You'll basically need to drag the clothing into place to make sure it fits properly and then press submit. This will save the position of this piece for the new system.

I'll also log every submission that is made so I can see who did what. Basically, when I have to manually go 1 by 1 to check on each one, I'll also count those who helped and send some kind of rewards, BUT I don't know what those will be so I wouldn't enter just for a prize lol - only if you actually wanna help.
